So, back in the mid-1970’s, a study showed that there were approximately 300,000 active volunteer firefighters in 3,000 state fire departments. By the mid 1990’s, that number dropped to 70,000 in 2,500 departments.

The Tuesday night crash of a Sikorsky S-61 helicopter has left four hospitalized and nine missing. Of the fours who sustained injuries from the crash, three were contract firefighters and one was the pilot of the chopper.
